Say YES to equality!

Texas Needs HERO

Houston — ground zero in the national battle for equality — has a big election coming up. Proposition 1, the Houston Equal Rights Ordinance (HERO), will be on the ballot on November 3rd.

Whether or not you live in Houston, the fight for HERO is an important one. This election could have ripple effects throughout the state and country.

I say YES to equality and pledge to be a HERO in the fight for Proposition 1. I will vote YES on Prop 1 or tell my Houston friends to vote YES.

    Background & Updates

Houston is the only major city in Texas—and the largest city in the country—without an equal rights ordinance.

HERO protects against discrimination on the basis of 15 characteristics, including race, sexual identity, gender identity, disability, age, religion, ethnicity, gender and pregnancy. 73% of complaints filed under HERO so far were related to racial, gender, or pregnancy discrimination. Without HERO, these Houstonians would have to file expensive and lengthy federal lawsuits.

If HERO is repealed, it will be totally legal to discriminate against people who are gay and transgender in Houston. Gay and transgender people in Houston today can legally get fired simply because of who they are.

And the enormous impact of HERO doesn’t stop there. This election could have ripple effects throughout the state and country. The anti-LGBT opposition is using Houston as a tactical testing ground for their hate and fear mongering.
